CARSON CITY, Nevada — Sierra Stain LLC, based in Carson City, Nevada, has issued a recall for three water-based tattoo pigments after they were found to be contaminated with high concentrations of harmful microorganisms. The affected products, distributed nationwide through Amazon, pose a significant health risk to consumers.
The recall includes the following tattoo pigments:

- Contaminants Identified: Citrobacter braakii, Citrobacter farmer, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Achromobacter xylosoxidans, Ochrobactrum anthropi, Cupriavidus pauculus
- Bloodline 1oz/30mL ALL PURPOSE BLACK
- Batch #1 Lot BL23
- Manufactured: 07/01/23
- Expires: 07/01/26
- Contaminant Identified: Acetobacter senegalensis
- Bloodline 1/2oz/15mL UV CHINA PINK
- Batch #1 Lot SC23
- Manufactured: 06/23
- Expires: 06/26
- Contaminants Identified: Curtobacterium citreum/pusillum
These products are packaged in plastic rounded bullet-shaped PET bottles with black dispense screw tops.
The recall was initiated following an FDA analysis that confirmed the presence of multiple microorganisms in the tattoo inks. Although no illnesses have been reported to date, the contamination presents a significant risk. Infections associated with contaminated tattoo inks can result in rashes, red papules, and potentially permanent scarring. The symptoms of tattoo-related infections can be difficult to distinguish from other conditions, such as allergic reactions.
Tattoo artists and retailers are advised to cease using or selling the recalled inks immediately and to dispose of the products in a sharps container or a similar biohazard container. Tattooing should be performed in a professional environment to minimize the risk of contamination.
