PIKE COUNTY, Ohio — The Ohio Highway Patrol has released further details on an OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) checkpoint scheduled for this week. According to Lieutenant J. Schuldt, commander of the Portsmouth Post, the checkpoint will be conducted on Friday evening in Pike County.
“Based on provisional data, there were 672 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 1,242 people lost their lives last year in Ohio,” Lt. Schuldt stated. “State troopers make an average of 25,000 OVI arrests each year in an effort to combat these dangerous drivers. OVI checkpoints are designed to not only deter impaired driving but to proactively remove these dangerous drivers from our roadways.”
While the exact location of the checkpoint has not yet been disclosed, it will be announced on Friday morning. The Ohio Highway Patrol encourages all drivers to remain vigilant and to avoid getting behind the wheel while impaired.
OVI checkpoints are part of a larger statewide effort to increase road safety and reduce the number of impaired drivers on Ohio’s roadways.
