CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — An 18-year-old Chillicothe resident, Hunter Detty, was detained early Tuesday morning after firing a handgun near downtown Chillicothe.
According to the police report, a Chillicothe officer stationed near Yoctangee Park heard a single gunshot sound around the area of South Walnut Street. Following the noise, the officer claims to have observed a black Hyundai Elantra leaving the area without a visible license plate.
The officer reported following the vehicle as it traveled through multiple intersections before stopping near Hickory and 7th Streets. The officer initiated a traffic stop and detained Detty, describing his behavior as “erratic.” When asked about weapons, Detty allegedly appeared nervous and uncertain, according to the report.
The police report further states that Detty consented to a search of his vehicle, where officers claim to have discovered a Taurus G3 9mm handgun loaded with four rounds, along with additional loose ammunition and spent shell casings. The officer claims Detty eventually admitted to firing the weapon, stating that he had been “having a bad day” and discharged the gun into the air. Detty allegedly requested that his vehicle be released to his mother.
Due to Detty’s age, he was taken to Ross County Jail and charged with Carrying Concealed Weapons, a first-degree misdemeanor. His court appearance is scheduled for November 5, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. According to the report, around the same time as the traffic stop, dispatch received another call reporting gunfire near 7th and Mechanic Streets, though officers were unable to locate any additional evidence in that area.
All evidence, including the firearm and ammunition, was collected, and the officer’s account notes that the gun was later tested at the CPD range.
