NELSONVILLE, Ohio — Authorities in Athens County are seeking the public’s help after a grey and white female terrier was found dead in a pond in Nelsonville, in what appears to be a deliberate act of animal cruelty.

The dog was discovered on November 1 by individuals fishing at a pond on Pine Grove Drive. Responding to the scene, the Athens County Humane Agent and Nelsonville Police found evidence suggesting foul play. The dog had been shot and its body weighed down before being discarded in the water, authorities said.
Investigators are appealing to the community for any information that could help identify the dog or shed light on the circumstances surrounding its death.
“Any assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated as we work to ensure justice is served,” the Athens County Humane Agent said in a statement.
Those with information are urged to contact the Athens County Humane Agent at 740-590-0711 or via email at agenteathenshumane.org.
The investigation is ongoing.
