COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohioans looking to book a holiday stay on Airbnb may want to prepare for steeper-than-usual accommodation costs this season. A recent study from Upgraded Points highlights significant price increases across popular U.S. travel destinations, with Columbus seeing some of the highest premiums in the country, particularly around Thanksgiving.
According to the Austin-based travel research firm, the holiday weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s bring about an average 64% rise in Airbnb costs compared to non-holiday rates. However, Columbus, Ohio, stands out with a substantial 117.5% increase for Airbnb stays during Thanksgiving week, marking it as one of the top three cities nationwide with the most significant holiday rate hike for that week. This spike ranks Columbus alongside Baton Rouge, Louisiana (199%), and Madison, Wisconsin (163.2%), where travelers will experience the highest premiums for Thanksgiving stays.

Keri Stooksbury, editor-in-chief of Upgraded Points, emphasized that timing and location are critical for travelers aiming to find affordable accommodations. “Our study provides insight into which cities carry the highest Airbnb premiums, helping travelers make informed choices before their seasonal getaways,” she said.
Holiday Premiums by City and Season
While Thanksgiving is notably expensive in Columbus, cities like Fort Myers, Florida, and Las Vegas, Nevada, see the most substantial Airbnb price jumps over Christmas and New Year’s, with increases surpassing 100% in each. Ohio residents planning holiday travel to these coastal and entertainment hubs may face even steeper prices if their trips extend beyond Thanksgiving.
Ohio’s neighboring states also experience similar increases during the season. Grand Rapids, Michigan, joins the list with a 107.8% increase over Thanksgiving, and those venturing to warmer spots, like Tampa, Florida, for New Year’s, will encounter a 134.8% rise. Coastal cities like Honolulu, Sarasota, and Fort Myers are likewise set to see drastic holiday premiums, making advance planning crucial for travelers on a budget.
Cost-Friendly Alternatives
Despite these increases, some cities remain relatively affordable during the holidays. Los Angeles, Bakersfield, and San Diego, California, are among those with the lowest rate hikes, making them attractive options for travelers looking to save on accommodation costs.
