COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio students have a new chance to showcase their creativity and storm safety knowledge as the 2025 Severe Weather Awareness Poster Contest opens for submissions. Organized by the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness (OCSWA) in collaboration with the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency (EMA), the contest is part of Ohio’s annual Severe Weather Awareness campaign.

The contest invites students from kindergarten through eighth grade, including those in special education, public, private, and home school classes, to illustrate Ohio’s severe weather events—such as tornadoes, thunderstorms, and flooding—and show safety steps people should take before, during, and after these weather events.

“In Ohio, we can see the impacts of severe weather at any time, no matter the season,” noted Ohio EMA Director Sima Merick. “This contest provides Ohio’s youth an opportunity to use their creative skills while learning about the threats and hazards that severe weather can pose.”

Schools across Ohio will soon receive more details about the contest. All entries must be postmarked or e-mailed by January 10, 2025.
