ASHVILLE, Ohio —
Ashville Police Chief Jeff George is facing charges today.

The charges are stemming from an alleged theft in office, according to Pickaway County Sheriff Matthew Hafey.

On July 9, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Sheriff Hafey contacted his detectives following a complaint that Chief George had removed an item from the Ashville Police Department’s property room, which was supposed to be destroyed under a municipal court order. The incident occurred on February 15, 2024, when Chief George reportedly took the item and placed it in his personal vehicle. After being confronted by the Ashville Village Counci, Chief George returned the item on June 25.

Chief George has been charged with a misdemeanor of the fourth degree for unauthorized use, rather than a felony theft in office. The case is being handled by the Madison County Prosecutor’s office. The Pickaway County Prosecutor recused herself from the investigation, leading to Madison County’s involvement. The Madison County Prosecutor, who is specially appointed for this case, did not provide further details when contacted by the Guardian.

Chief George, who earns more than $40 per hour, has been on paid administrative leave since July, while the investigation continues. The Guardian attempted to reach out to the village administrator, the police chief, and the mayor for comment but received no response.

Chief George is due in court on December 19.

UPDATE 3:30 PM: Village administrator Bert Cline contacted the Guardian after publication of this story and said he does not oversee the police department and that things remain status quo. He said that he “expects” council to take action against Chief George once George attends his arraignment.
