ROSS COUNTY, Ohio — Authorities are investigating an assault at Paint Valley School that left a 15-year-old male student with a concussion and other minor injuries, deputies said.

The incident occurred this week, in a breezeway area between buildings at the school as students were heading to lunch, according to a narrative report by Lieutenant Angela Hollis of the Ross County Sheriff’s Office. Units were dispatched to Greenfield Medical Center’s Emergency Department to speak with the injured juvenile, who had been transported from the school.

Hollis arrived at the hospital and interviewed the victim, whose name is being withheld due to his age, in the presence of his mother’s boyfriend while awaiting the arrival of the boy’s mother. The juvenile reported that another student, also unnamed, insulted his mother, prompting him to retaliate with an insult about the other student’s girlfriend. The suspect then allegedly punched the victim approximately 15 times in the head, causing him to strike his head against a wall.

The victim sustained a raised bump on his forehead, a small mark inside his lip, and redness on his nose and the side of his face, Hollis noted. He told deputies he did not fight back during the attack. A doctor confirmed the teen had a concussion and provided concussion protocol instructions.

The victim’s mother, upon arriving at the hospital, told Hollis she had spoken with the Paint Valley School principal, who confirmed her son did not retaliate and said video evidence of the incident would be provided. The mother expressed her intent to press charges against the alleged assailant and was given a victim’s rights packet.

Hollis reported that the victim identified two witnesses to the incident. The teen said he and the suspect had been friends with two others but had not been getting along for the past week, though he was unaware of any specific issues that might have provoked the attack.

Photographs of the injuries were taken, and the victim provided a written statement and signed a medical records release. The investigation remains ongoing, with follow-up attempts planned in the coming days as school had ended by the time Hollis concluded her initial hospital visit.

Deputies have not released additional details about the suspect or potential charges pending further investigation.

The school did not release a statement.
