CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A traffic stop for loud music in Chillicothe led to a foot chase, a struggle with police, and the discovery of suspected drugs and multiple firearms, including a stolen handgun, authorities said.
Police arrested Kwamne Wharton, 36, following the incident on Friday evening on Walnut Street.
According to a police report, officers stopped a vehicle after hearing loud music audible from more than 100 feet away. While speaking with Wharton, officers reported smelling burnt marijuana coming from inside the car and observed what appeared to be marijuana residue and related items in the vehicle.
During a search, police said they discovered suspected drugs inside the center console. As officers attempted to detain Wharton, he allegedly fled on foot, leading officers through nearby streets and residential yards.
Authorities said Wharton was taken into custody after a brief struggle. Police reported that Wharton resisted arrest and attempted to reach toward his waistband. A taser was deployed but had no effect, according to the report, and officers ultimately restrained him.
Following the arrest, officers searched the vehicle and reported finding suspected cocaine, marijuana, drug packaging materials, a digital scale, and cash. Police also said a backpack in the trunk contained multiple firearms, including a loaded Glock handgun that was later confirmed to be stolen, along with additional ammunition and suspected drugs.
Wharton was booked into the Ross County Jail on charges including carrying a concealed weapon, having weapons while under disability, receiving stolen property, obstructing official business and resisting arrest. Police said additional drug-related charges are pending laboratory analysis.
He was also cited for loud sound amplification.
The vehicle was towed and placed on hold pending forfeiture. The case remains under investigation.
