BAINBRIDGE, Ohio — The Bainbridge Fire Department issued a safety advisory Tuesday following two separate camper fires that occurred Monday, Jan. 19.
According to the department, preliminary investigations determined the fires were caused by the use of unsafe heating methods. No injuries were reported in either incident.
Fire officials said the incidents serve as a reminder of the dangers associated with heating small, enclosed spaces such as campers and trailers during colder weather.
In response, the department urged residents and visitors to follow several safety guidelines to help prevent future tragedies. Officials advised using only space heaters designed for indoor use and ensuring they are equipped with automatic shut-off features. The department also recommended keeping flammable materials — including bedding, curtains and clothing — at least three feet away from heating sources.
Additional guidance included ensuring proper ventilation to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide, inspecting heating appliances for damaged or frayed cords before use, and verifying that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and functioning correctly within living units.
“The safety of our community is our top priority. We ask all residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution and prioritize fire safety protocols when using supplemental heating,” the department said in the advisory.
