SWANTON, Ohio — Residents across northern Ohio may hear the roar of fighter jets overhead Wednesday morning as the Ohio Air National Guard conducts an air defense training exercise.

The 180th Fighter Wing, based in Swanton, is running the exercise over the northern Ohio area between 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The drill is designed to evaluate response and coordination procedures in a simulated threat scenario.

Those living in and around the Sandusky area are most likely to see or hear the activity. Fighter jets will be flying in close proximity to a Civil Air Patrol aircraft playing the role of a “Track of Interest” — a designation used for aircraft identified as a potential threat.

The exercise could be relocated, delayed, or canceled due to weather.

There is no cause for public alarm. The flights are part of routine readiness training.
