LEESBURG, Ohio — A New Vienna man led Highland County sheriff’s deputies on a chase that reached 100 mph before a Leesburg police officer stopped his car and arrested him on drug and fleeing charges, according to the Highland County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy on patrol Sept. 11 in the 11000 block of state Route 771 noticed a silver Dodge Charger without a license plate sitting stationary in the roadway, the sheriff’s office said. As the deputy turned around to investigate, the driver sped off northbound on state Route 771 at a high rate of speed.
The deputy pursued the vehicle as it turned onto Bridges Road and then state Route 138, where its speed was recorded at 100 mph, according to the sheriff’s office. The car then turned northbound onto Cope Road before the deputy called off the chase.
A short time later, a Leesburg police officer stopped the vehicle in the 9000 block of Centerfield Road, the sheriff’s office said.
The driver was identified as Larry D. Nunley, 56, of New Vienna. He was charged with failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A passenger, Kristopher W. Bennett, 38, also of New Vienna, was charged with possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the sheriff’s office.
Suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
