FAYETTE COUNTY, Ohio — A multi-vehicle crash shut down all lanes of Interstate 71 in both directions in Fayette County on Sunday afternoon, according to Jefferson Township Fire & EMS.
The closure is in effect between mile markers 38 and 41, with both northbound and southbound traffic stopped while crews work the scene, the fire department said in a Facebook post. Jefferson Township Fire & EMS urged drivers to avoid the stretch of interstate and plan accordingly as the closure continues.
No information on injuries or what led to the crash was immediately available.
I-71 is one of Ohio’s principal north-south interstates, connecting Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland, and a full closure in Fayette County can back up traffic for miles given the limited number of alternate routes through the rural stretch of highway.
