PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Portsmouth City Schools is accepting applications to fill a vacant seat on its Board of Education after member Rebecca Kalb resigned Aug. 4, citing a change in family circumstances.
The board must name a replacement within 30 days of the resignation and will begin interviewing candidates immediately, according to the district. The appointee will serve until Dec. 31, 2027, and would need to run in the next general election to continue on the board afterward.
“Since joining the Portsmouth City Schools Board of Education in January 2024, Mrs. Kalb has been a dedicated advocate for our students, staff, and community,” Superintendent Matthew McCorkle said in a statement. “We sincerely appreciate Mrs. Kalb’s willingness to serve the students and families of Portsmouth City Schools and thank her for the time, leadership, and commitment she has devoted to our district.”
Kalb was elected to the board and began her term on Jan. 1, 2024, according to the district.
Under Ohio law, board candidates must be at least 18 years old, district residents and registered voters. Those interested in applying can contact Andrea White for an application or download one from the district’s website.
Applications will be accepted through Aug. 14, and the board will hold candidate interviews during a special meeting on Aug. 18, Aug. 19 or both, the district said. Board member J. Walker said the full board will review applications and decide on a replacement at its Aug. 27 meeting.
Portsmouth City Schools serves students in three buildings in Portsmouth and Sciotoville.
