WAVERLY, Ohio — Pike County General Health District will host a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” community event Aug. 21, pairing food trucks and vendors with a public safety message aimed at curbing impaired driving, the Waverly Police Department said in a Facebook post.
The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the health district’s office, 116 S. Market St. in Waverly, according to the post. Vendors set to attend include Cake Out, a custom mini cake bar, and The Savory Shack food truck, the post said.
“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is the name of a long-running national high-visibility enforcement campaign coordinated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that pairs stepped-up law enforcement patrols with advertising warning drivers against getting behind the wheel while impaired. The summer phase of the campaign typically runs from mid-August through Labor Day, timed to a period when impaired-driving crashes rise, and the agency runs a second phase during the winter holidays.
According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, alcohol-impaired driving accounted for nearly a third of the nation’s traffic deaths in 2023, when 12,429 people were killed in crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver.
Pike County General Health District’s stated mission is to improve residents’ quality of life by preventing disease, promoting health and ensuring safe surroundings countywide, according to the health district.
