PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Portsmouth City Health Department will spray for mosquitoes in three areas of the city Tuesday evening, targeting Endicott Avenue in Sciotoville, the downtown stretch of Front Street to Fourth Street, and the Farley Square neighborhood.
The spraying is scheduled for approximately 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 1, the health department said in a Facebook post.
The department is recommending that anyone with chronic breathing problems turn off their air conditioner or close their windows during the spraying window.
The work falls under the health department’s Environmental Health Division, which is responsible for pest control services citywide, including baiting public sewers for rats and spraying for mosquitoes, according to the department. Ohio health departments run mosquito-control programs seasonally, typically using truck-mounted foggers to disperse a low-volume pesticide mist in the evening, when mosquitoes are most active and beneficial insects such as bees are less likely to be exposed.
The announcement comes about three weeks after the health department reported that routine surveillance had turned up West Nile virus in mosquito pools in the central and eastern parts of Portsmouth, prompting an earlier round of treatment in that area.
