PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with the county’s Children Services division for a free Trunk-or-Treat event next month, giving families an early — and safe — start to Halloween.
The event is set for Oct. 28 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Scioto County Job and Family Services building, 710 Court St. in Portsmouth, according to a post from the sheriff’s office. All children are invited, and organizers said kids can expect to see fire trucks and snow plows in addition to collecting candy trunk to trunk.
The sheriff’s office said in a post that it is “proud to support” Children Services for this year’s event, calling it “a great reminder of what makes our community special.”
Trunk-or-treat events have become a fixture of the Halloween season across Ohio in recent years, giving families a centralized, well-lit alternative to house-to-house trick-or-treating. Local agencies and organizations decorate vehicle trunks with candy and Halloween displays, and children move from car to car in a parking lot rather than walking door to door.
Children Services operates as a division of the Scioto County Department of Job and Family Services, which also administers cash assistance, food assistance, child care and Medicaid programs for county residents out of its Court Street office. The division investigates reports of child abuse and neglect and works with families referred either through its own assessments or by order of Scioto County Juvenile Court.
Sheriff David Thoroughman’s office regularly partners with local organizations on community outreach events throughout the year, an effort aimed at building relationships between deputies and residents outside of law enforcement calls.
