JACKSON COUNTY, Ohio — Two people wanted in connection with a homicide investigation in North Carolina were found dead of gunshot wounds inside their vehicle Thursday after leading Ohio troopers on a pursuit that crossed from Athens County into Jackson County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The patrol identified the two as Carmyn Moore, 26, and Corey Armstrong, 29.
An automated license plate reader flagged a black Mercedes-Benz registered to an owner wanted in the North Carolina murder investigation at about 8:17 a.m. as it traveled westbound on U.S. 50 in Athens County, the patrol said. Troopers and Athens Police Department officers located the car and tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver did not stop, touching off a pursuit, according to the patrol.
The pursuit lasted more than 20 minutes before troopers attempted to stop the vehicle on state Route 32 in Jackson County using a tire deflation device, the patrol said. The vehicle swerved to avoid the device and struck a road sign before coming to a stop near Hiram West Road, according to the patrol. Troopers then heard two gunshots come from inside the car.
Moore and Armstrong were found dead inside the vehicle with gunshot wounds, the patrol said. No other injuries were reported, and no shots were fired by law enforcement, according to the patrol.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Athens Police Department, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the Jackson Police Department, the Wellston Police Department and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
