CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — Circleville firefighters, police officers and hundreds of students climbed the bleachers at Tiger Stadium on Friday for the city’s second annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, an event that drew recognition from Ohio’s attorney general, a U.S. senator and the governor as the community marked 25 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Circleville City Schools partnered with the city of Circleville and the Circleville Fire and Police departments to host the climb, according to a Facebook post from the fire department. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson attended in person, and U.S. Sen. Jon Husted and Gov. Mike DeWine sent recognition and a special proclamation marking the day, the fire department said.
The climb was held at Circleville High School’s Tiger Stadium, where participants climbed stadium bleachers in full turnout gear to honor firefighters killed in the 2001 attacks. The event was first held last year in partnership with OhioHealth, with proceeds benefiting Foundations 4 Youth, a Circleville-based nonprofit that supports youth programs in Pickaway County, and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which was chartered by Congress in 1992 to honor firefighters killed in the line of duty and support their families.
In a statement posted after the event, Circleville City Schools said the day was one of “remembrance, pride and gratitude,” and thanked the visiting officials for their recognition. “Tiger Nation was filled with pride and gratitude for all those who sacrifice to protect our freedoms,” the district said in the post. “We will never forget.”
