PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Portsmouth City Health Department is urging women to take advantage of two no-cost screening programs during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, encouraging those who qualify to call and schedule an appointment.
The health department said in a Facebook post that its clinic is enrolling eligible women in the Ohio Breast and Cervical Cancer Project, known as BCCP, and the WISEWOMAN program, both of which are administered through the Ohio Department of Health.
BCCP provides no-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic testing, along with a patient navigation service that helps participants find providers, schedule appointments, understand insurance options and connect with community resources, according to the health department. Statewide, the program is open to women 21 and older who are uninsured or underinsured, are Ohio residents and have household income at or below 300% of the federal poverty level, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
WISEWOMAN builds on BCCP by adding cardiovascular screenings for women ages 35 to 64 who meet the same income and insurance requirements. The program includes blood pressure checks and a blood test for cholesterol and blood sugar, along with optional health coaching aimed at lowering a woman’s risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
“Your health is worth making time for,” the health department said in its post.
Women interested in learning whether they qualify can call the Portsmouth City Health Department clinic at 740-353-8863 or stop by in person to schedule an appointment, the department said.
