CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Chillicothe Farmers Market will celebrate the grand opening of its new permanent pavilion in Yoctangee Park on Saturday, Nov. 7, the city announced.
Doors will open at 9 a.m. and the market will run until noon, according to a post from the city. Officials said early arrivals will have a chance to win giveaways tied to the opening.
The pavilion will host the same mix of fresh produce, farm-grown vegetables, live music and handcrafted goods that have long been staples of the market, now under a permanent roof in a new location in the park.
The project traces back to February, when the city first announced plans for a year-round pavilion funded through Ohio’s Appalachian Community Grant program, which is putting more than $500 million into projects across the region. City officials said at the time that the farmers market had operated outdoors in all weather and that a permanent, climate-controlled space would give it a reliable home for the first time.
By July, the city said construction crews were making visible progress on the mass timber structure, designed to be both durable and economical. Plans call for heating so the building can be used through the winter, along with large ceiling fans for warm-weather comfort. Sixteen garage doors line the structure and can be raised to create an open-air setting during markets and events, and a concession area opens to both the interior and exterior of the building. The site also includes restrooms and a new nearby parking lot for visitors.
City officials have said the project is intended to strengthen the connection between Yoctangee Park and Historic Downtown Chillicothe, with the market sitting just steps from downtown businesses.
