PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Scioto County Health Department will hold two flu shot clinics next week at the Scioto County Courthouse, offering vaccinations to anyone 6 months of age or older ahead of the winter flu season.

The clinics will run in the courthouse lobby, 602 7th St., on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Thursday, Oct. 29, from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the health department said in a post on Facebook. No appointment is required, and residents are encouraged to walk in during the posted hours.

Senior-specific formulations will be available for adults 65 and older, a group the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends preferentially receive a high-dose, adjuvanted or recombinant flu vaccine because of their increased risk of complications from influenza. The CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated annually, generally in September or October, though shots remain effective and available throughout the season as flu activity continues.

Residents are asked to bring a photo ID, along with a health insurance card if they have one and a Medicaid or Medicare card if applicable. The health department said those without insurance may still be able to receive a flu shot while supplies last.

The clinics are open to any Scioto County resident who needs a flu vaccine for the upcoming season, according to the health department, which has framed the effort as a way to protect not just individuals but their families and the broader community.
