MCARTHUR, Ohio — The McArthur Fire Department will test fire hydrants throughout the village Thursday and Friday, working alongside the McArthur Water Department, the fire department said in a Facebook post.

Residents may see fire department apparatus and personnel working along roadways and near hydrants throughout the community during the two-day effort, the department said.

Drivers are asked to use caution when traveling through the affected areas, slow down and give crews plenty of room to work safely, the department said.

McArthur is the county seat of Vinton County, Ohio’s least populous and most rural county, with a population of roughly 1,700 people. Routine hydrant testing allows fire departments to confirm adequate water pressure and flow at each hydrant and to identify any that need repair before they’re needed in an emergency, helping ensure a reliable water supply for firefighting operations.

The fire department said the testing is an important part of making sure hydrants are ready when needed most.
