Galen Lee Powell, 75, formerly of Sciotoville, passed away November 1, 2026, at SOMC Hospice. He was born February 16, 1951, on Swauger Valley, a son of the late David and Alice (Thompson) Powell. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen and Kenneth Powell, and a sister, Jean Powell.
Galen graduated from Minford High School with the Class of 1969 and continued his education at Nashville Diesel Mechanic School. He spent many years driving trucks for Carolina Freight and Holland Freight until his retirement, forming lasting friendships along the way.
He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed hunting and traveling far and wide to watch sprint car races. He spent years training hunting dogs and loved every single one he worked with. Gatlinburg, Tennessee, held a special place in his heart and always felt like a second home.
Above all, Galen loved his family. He was also a true and loyal friend to the many people he met throughout his life, especially during his years driving trucks. Those friendships stayed close to his heart long after the miles were behind him, and he loved those friends like family. He cherished his lifelong friendships with Phillip Gammon and Keith Underwood and the special friendships he shared with Homer Bailey, Leo Duncan, and Rick Shepherd.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janie (Harvey) Powell; two sons, Duane (Emily) Powell and David Powell; three daughters, Kimberly (Bill) Webb, Shari Powell, and Suzanne Bird; and a brother, Dennis Powell.
His 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren meant everything to him. They were his pride and joy, and the love he had for each of them was a treasured part of his life. His grandchildren are Beth (Ryan), Aubrey, Henry, Grant (Ellie), Claire, Hannah (Kameron), Emily (Barry), Sylvia (Alex), Carson, Olivia, Jed, and Kenny; and his great-grandchildren are Thalia, Hunter, Kaiser, Kasen, and Addie. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
