PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Scioto County Dog Shelter is asking the community to help give every dog in its care a Thanksgiving meal this year, with a $10 donation covering one dog’s holiday dinner, the shelter said in a Facebook post.
Under the shelter’s “Thankful Paws” program, $10 sponsors one dog’s meal, $20 sponsors two and $50 sponsors five, according to the post. Staff plan to take an individual Thanksgiving photo of each dog in the shelter’s care and share the pictures publicly, along with a thank-you to the specific donor who sponsored that dog’s meal.
The shelter is also offering keepsake photos of pets and families posed in front of a fall-themed barn backdrop, and said it may bring back a similar setup for Christmas next month depending on interest, according to the post.
Separately, the shelter said it has received a donation that will fund six complete adoptions — covering the adoption fee, vaccinations and spay or neuter surgery — for as long as the money lasts, the post said.
Anyone interested in sponsoring a meal, scheduling a holiday photo or taking advantage of the subsidized adoptions is asked to contact the shelter directly, according to the post.
The shelter operates out of the county’s Dog and Kennel Department at 95 Arrowhead North Road in Portsmouth. Ohio counties have employed dog wardens since 1927, when the Ohio General Assembly created the office to enforce dog-licensing laws and handle claims for livestock damaged by dogs, according to the Ohio County Dog Wardens Association, a statewide nonprofit representing the state’s county dog warden offices.
