PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — A crash involving a Wyandot County Sheriff prisoner transport van ended in tragedy on Thursday after a deputy was killed.

According to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, rescue crews arrived on the scene of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of routes 104 and 56 just before 11 a.m.
A truck driven by Steven S. Short of Mt. Sterling collided with a Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office transport van.

Deputy Daniel Kin, at the time, was transporting an inmate when the crash occurred.
Officials say the deputy was transported by medical helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where he died as a result of the crash.
The inmate, whose name has not been released, was taken by ambulance to OhioHealth Berger hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Short was also transported to Grant, where he remains in stable condition.
A four-year-old passenger in the pickup was taken by Scioto Township EMS to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

The Wyandot Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying, “It is with great sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the unexpected passing of our dear friend and colleague, Deputy Daniel J. Kin. Dan served with the Seneca County before joining the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office in October of 2021. Dan was such a positive person with an awesome smile. He will be greatly missed.”
Lt. Johnathan Strawser of the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office says the crash remains under investigation. It has not been determined who was at fault.
