CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Ross County Auditor Jeff Lehner has announced a major reduction in real estate fees, waiving approximately $450,000 as part of Ross County’s second-half 2024 property tax levy distribution. This follows last year’s refund of nearly $500,000 in fees to local school districts, townships, and other levying jurisdictions.

Each property tax season, Ohio county auditors calculate levy revenues based on each levy’s millage and distribute them to the appropriate taxing authorities. A fee to fund the Auditor’s real estate office operations is typically withheld from these distributions.

Lehner explained that state law requires these fees to be returned to taxing districts via their governing authorities, rather than directly to taxpayers. “This move is the best available alternative to allowing these funds to sit in the County’s account without any clear purpose or plan,” he said.

Lehner emphasized the importance of responsible government spending, stating that excess funds sitting too long are often wasted. Cutting these fees is part of the Auditor’s office effort to stand up for taxpayers and ensure efficient use of resources.

Ross County residents are encouraged to email Auditor Lehner with any questions at [email protected].
