NEW BOSTON, Ohio — The Village of New Boston will host a free back-to-school clothes swap next month, giving families a chance to pick up gently used clothing for the coming school year at no cost.
The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Vern Riffe Community Center, 3980 Rhodes Ave., according to a post on the village’s Facebook page. Residents who want to donate clothing ahead of time can drop items off during an early collection period from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 14.
Men’s, women’s and children’s clothing of all sizes will be available, the village said. Organizers are asking residents to bring gently used clothing to share, and anyone is welcome to browse and take home items others have donated.
The community center hosting the swap is named for Vern Riffe, a New Boston native who represented southern Ohio in the Ohio House of Representatives for 36 years and served as House speaker from 1975 to 1994 — longer than anyone else in state history. Riffe, who died in 1997, was a driving force behind state funding for regional projects, including the growth of Shawnee State University in nearby Portsmouth.
