CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Chillicothe City Council will consider asking voters in November to approve a new income tax increase dedicated to street paving, months after a similar tax measure narrowly failed at the polls, according to the agenda for Monday’s regular meeting.
A resolution set for a first reading at the 7 p.m. meeting would declare the necessity of placing an additional 0.2% municipal income tax before Chillicothe voters at the Nov. 3 general election. If approved by voters, the tax would be used exclusively for street paving, repairs and improvements, according to the agenda.
Chillicothe voters narrowly rejected a similar municipal income tax increase in the May 5 election, with unofficial returns showing the measure failing by about 100 votes.
Council is also scheduled to consider two other first-reading measures Monday. One would appropriate $100,000 to the city’s income tax refund line and transfer $25,000 of that back to the general fund to cover the city’s share of income tax refunds. The other would authorize the city auditor to create a new Fund No. 999, to be called the Payroll Clearing Fund. Both carry emergency clauses, meaning they would take effect immediately if council approves them.
Chillicothe City Council meets at 7 p.m. at 26 S. Paint St. The council meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, and meetings are open to the public.
