HILLSBORO, Ohio — More than 100 Southern State Community College students are receiving over $225,000 in scholarships for the upcoming academic year, funded through donors, community partnerships and the college’s foundation, the college announced.
“This funding helps remove barriers that often stand between students and their dreams,” Southern State President Dr. Nicole Roades said in a statement.
Amy Perkins-McClellan, the college’s vice president of enrollment and workforce innovation, said the awards reflect community investment in students. “Every scholarship represents someone in our community choosing to invest in a student’s potential,” she said in a statement.
Among the recipients is Kallie Fraley, a first-generation college student who is balancing part-time work, classes and caregiving responsibilities. She said the scholarship allows her to “stay in school and work toward a career where I can make a difference.”
Caleb Garcia, who works full time as an avionics engineer while pursuing FAA Airframe and Powerplant licensing, commutes from Florence, Kentucky, to evening classes at the Wilmington Laurel Oaks Career Campus. He said the scholarship eases the financial burden of supporting his family while he completes the program.
Mandi Diehl, a single parent pursuing her education, said the award represents “more than financial support,” giving her the opportunity to build “a better future for my family.”
