HILLSBORO, Ohio — A Hoxworth Blood Center donor bus will park outside the Highland County Health Department on Friday, giving area residents two windows to donate and help supply blood to hospitals across the region.
The bus will be stationed at the health department, 1487 N. High St., from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and again from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., the health department said in a Facebook post. Appointments are encouraged and can be scheduled online or by phone, though the health department said donors may also be accommodated without one.
Every donor will receive a cooler tote or backpack, according to the health department, which also encouraged donors to ask about giving Red Cell donations — a process that collects only red blood cells so the body can more quickly replace the plasma and platelets that are returned to the donor.
Hoxworth Blood Center, the University of Cincinnati’s affiliated blood bank, supplies blood products to 31 hospitals across 18 counties in southwestern Ohio, northern Kentucky and southeastern Indiana, according to the center. It traces its history to December 1938, when it opened inside Cincinnati General Hospital as the city’s first community blood bank. The center became part of the University of Cincinnati in 1944 and was renamed in 1973 in honor of founding director Paul I. Hoxworth. It remains the oldest continuously operating blood bank in the country and the only community blood bank in the United States partnered with a university, according to the center.
