PIKETON, Ohio — Centrus Energy Corp. has signed a contract to supply enriched uranium fuel to nuclear technology company X-energy, with production planned at Centrus’ American Centrifuge Plant in Pike County, according to a news release from Centrus.
The deal, signed Aug. 6, calls for Centrus to provide X-energy with low-enriched uranium and high-assay, low-enriched uranium, known as HALEU, to support X-energy’s Xe-100 small modular reactors and TRISO-X fuel production, the release said. As part of the agreement, X-energy will make prepayments to Centrus to help fund the company’s buildout of domestic enrichment capacity.
Centrus said the contract adds to an existing $3 billion contingent backlog of LEU and HALEU orders, of which $2.4 billion is already finalized. The company has been ramping up hiring at the Piketon site, having raised its 2026 hiring goal to 175 new jobs there earlier this month.
“This is another significant agreement that validates Centrus as the go-to, de-risked supplier of HALEU to the global market,” Amir Vexler, president and CEO of Centrus, said in a statement. “Our work in Piketon and Oak Ridge is strengthening a U.S.-based nuclear fuel supply chain and is removing enrichment as a point of concern for the advanced reactor community.”
The agreement follows Centrus’ $900 million HALEU enrichment award from the U.S. Department of Energy, announced earlier this year, which the company also cited as part of its strategy to line up funding for its enrichment expansion, according to the release.
X-energy has previously announced commercial relationships with Dow Inc., Amazon and Centrica to support deployment of its advanced nuclear reactor technology, the release said.
Centrus, headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, operates the American Centrifuge Plant on the site of the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Pike County, where it has been expanding production capacity as part of a broader national push to rebuild domestic uranium enrichment capabilities.
