CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio — Maj. Hunter R. Lane, one of the top-ranking officers at the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, is retiring after more than 28 years with the agency, the sheriff’s office announced Friday.
Lane’s law enforcement career with the office began May 12, 1998, and will formally close out Aug. 31, 2026, a tenure of 28 years, three months and 19 days, according to a retirement plaque presented to him by Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey.

Lane rose through the ranks over nearly three decades at the office. In March 2023, Hafey promoted him from lieutenant to captain, one of five lieutenants elevated to that rank that year, before Lane went on to reach the rank of major.
“Best of luck Hunter on all of your future adventures,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post announcing the retirement.
Hafey was elected sheriff in 2020 and took office in January 2021. The office he leads is organized into jail and corrections, patrol, communications, court services, investigations, special operations and administration divisions, according to the agency’s website.
