NORTH CANTON, Ohio — U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, toured a commercial driver’s license training facility at Stark State College and led a roundtable on housing affordability Aug. 27, according to a release from his office.
Husted secured $875,000 for Stark State College’s CDL Instruction Center, funding that will support construction of classrooms, offices, a computer lab and workspace for students, the release said. The facility is expected to employ 20 Ohioans and train 220 CDL drivers annually once complete.
“One of my top priorities in the U.S. Senate is making life more affordable for working families,” Husted said in a statement. “In northeast Ohio, students are gaining the skills they need to fill in-demand jobs, while housing leaders are working to expand opportunities for Ohioans to afford a home. It was inspiring to see that work happening today, and I always leave these conversations encouraged by the people who are working to make a difference in their communities.”
Following the campus visit, Husted met with the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and housing leaders from across the state for a roundtable focused on increasing the housing supply and expanding affordable ownership opportunities, the release said.
The senator’s office pointed to several ongoing efforts in Congress aimed at lowering housing costs. Husted is a lead sponsor of the bipartisan First-Time Homebuyers Act, which would let Americans use existing 529 education savings accounts toward a first home purchase. He is also backing permitting reform intended to speed up construction timelines and reduce building costs, according to the release.
Husted also helped pass the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which was signed into law and is designed to address rising housing costs by cutting regulatory hurdles, increasing housing supply and preserving local control, the release said.
