WEST PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — Shawnee State Park Lodge will host a synchronized drone show over Scioto County on Sept. 12, one of nine Ohio State Park lodges taking part in a statewide tribute marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Great Ohio Lodges will present “Remember, Lights in the Sky” at 9 p.m. at each of the nine participating lodges, according to ODNR. Illuminated drones will fill the night sky in a coordinated display intended as what the agency called a visual tribute to service and sacrifice.
“Whether you’re joining us for the drone show, exploring the parks, or enjoying the many activities offered at our lodges, we hope you take this opportunity to experience the very best of Ohio State Parks,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said in a statement.
Shawnee State Park Lodge is planning a full day of activities leading up to the evening show, most of them free and open to the public, according to ODNR. Visitors can also explore the surrounding state park’s trails and lakes. Details for the Shawnee event are posted at shawneeparklodge.com.
The Scioto County event is part of a broader statewide push this year around the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which also brought a Revolutionary War encampment to a West Portsmouth park last month.
Randy Grismer of Great Ohio Lodges said in a statement that lodge staff had worked to build “meaningful, family friendly experiences” around the show. Other participating lodges include Burr Oak, Deer Creek, Hueston Woods, Hocking Hills, Mohican, Maumee Bay, Punderson and Salt Fork state parks.
