WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio — A ruptured natural gas line shut down two streets on the city’s east side Tuesday afternoon while crews worked to make repairs, according to the Washington Court House Fire Department.
The fire department said Dayton Avenue is closed between Mulberry Street and Cloverleaf Lane, and Jupiter Street is closed from Briar Avenue to Dayton Avenue, in a residential area near Twin Acres Apartments. The department labeled the closures an emergency road closure in a post to its Facebook page.
CenterPoint Energy, the natural gas utility that serves Washington Court House and the surrounding region, responded to the scene to repair the break, the fire department said. CenterPoint Energy delivers natural gas to hundreds of thousands of customers across a multi-county service territory in west central and southern Ohio.
The fire department asked residents and drivers to avoid the area while the repair work is underway. No injuries or evacuations were reported as of Tuesday afternoon.
Gas line breaks are commonly caused by underground excavation work, aging infrastructure or ground shifting, and utility crews typically shut off the flow of gas to the damaged section of pipe before making repairs and testing the line before reopening roads to traffic.
