FRANKLIN FURNACE, Ohio — The Green Township Volunteer Fire Department will host a Safety Day event Oct. 3 at its Gervais Road station, giving families hands-on fire safety demonstrations, a parade and free food a day before the start of National Fire Prevention Week.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 144 Gervais Road, according to a graphic the department posted on Facebook. It will feature a fire safety trailer for interactive learning, a fire prevention parade that lines up at 10 a.m. and steps off at 11 a.m., and the winner announcement for the department’s Miss Flame, Miss Spark and Mr. Sparky contest. Hot dogs, chips and beans will be served for free while supplies last.
The department is holding the event the day before Fire Prevention Week begins nationally. The National Fire Protection Association sets the observance each year for the Sunday-through-Saturday week that includes Oct. 9, the anniversary of the 1871 Great Chicago Fire; in 2026 that falls Oct. 4-10.
Green Township Volunteer Fire Department operates two stations and roughly 30 volunteer firefighters covering Green Township in eastern Scioto County, an area of about 4,100 residents. The department has continued to add equipment this year, including new wildland attack nozzles purchased in part with a grant from TC Energy.
