GREENFIELD, Ohio — A section of Cross Street collapsed into a large hole after an apparent culvert failure, prompting the village to close the road to through traffic between Edgewood Avenue and Sunshine Drive, the Village of Greenfield said Sunday.
The village said in a Facebook post that Cross Street remains open to local traffic only while the closure is in effect. A photo posted alongside the announcement showed a wide section of pavement cracked and collapsed into a deep hole, with a corrugated metal culvert pipe exposed beneath the roadway and water flowing through the opening.
The closure comes a day after Greenfield crews spent Saturday clearing storm drains and responding to flash flooding after more than 7 inches of rain fell on the village, prompting a flash flood warning from the National Weather Service. Greenfield straddles the Highland-Ross county line, and the weekend’s storms extended a stretch of wet weather that has affected the region since at least Sept. 9.
Cross Street connects Edgewood Avenue and Sunshine Drive in a residential section of Greenfield. Village officials have not said when repairs will be complete or how long the closure will remain in place.
