THE PLAINS, Ohio — A motorcyclist died Sunday afternoon after losing control on a rural Athens County road and striking a curb and a road sign, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The Athens Communication Center received a report of the one-vehicle crash at about 1:36 p.m. on South Plains Road, the patrol said. A 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling south when it left the right side of the roadway and struck a curb and a roadway sign, according to the patrol.

The driver, identified as Thomas W. Burson, 45, of The Plains, was the only person involved, the patrol said.

Athens County EMS and The Plains Fire Department responded to the scene and treated Burson before he was taken to Fairfield Medical Center, according to the patrol. He was later transferred to Adena Regional Medical Center for further evaluation, where he died from his injuries, the patrol said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Athens post.

The information contained in this story was obtained from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
