WHEELERSBURG, Ohio — Special Olympics Scioto County will hold its annual Walk-A-Thon fundraiser next month at Porter Township Community Park, drawing student and adult athletes with developmental disabilities from across the county, according to the Portsmouth City Health Department.
The walk is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at the park in Wheelersburg.
Participants are expected to include students from Vern Riffe School and other area schools that serve students with developmental disabilities, along with adults enrolled in adult daily services, group homes or private residences who choose to take part, the health department said in a social media post.
The event is organized through Scioto County Developmental Disabilities, the county board that coordinates services for residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities, in partnership with Special Olympics Scioto County. The Special Olympics program provides year-round training and competition in sports such as basketball, bowling, cheerleading, golf, volleyball and track and field for athletes of varying abilities, with local competitors having gone on to compete at the Special Olympics Ohio State Summer Games.
