CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Union-Scioto Local School District is experimenting with new morning drop-off and afternoon pickup procedures at the elementary school beginning Monday, after weeks of continued traffic backups despite a new turn lane at Pleasant Valley and Egypt Pike.

Under the change, both exits from the elementary parking lot will become right-turn only for morning drop-off, Superintendent Matt Thornsberry said in a statement. The adjustment follows an announcement earlier in the week from elementary Principal Barrows.

For afternoon pickup, the district will close the through-way gate between the soccer field parking lot and the parking area between the soccer and football fields, preventing vehicles from driving through those two lots to the other side. Additional overflow parking will be available near the concession stand and fieldhouse area, and a section of fencing along the football bleachers will be opened so parents can walk on foot to reach children in the adjacent parking area, according to the district.

Thornsberry described the moves as experiments that may be adjusted based on how traffic flow responds, saying some ideas came from parent suggestions. “We are going to figure it out,” he said in the statement.

The district is also seeking full-time and substitute bus drivers, a shortage that led Union-Scioto to consolidate five bus routes in late August. Anyone interested in driving can contact Transportation Supervisor Ost at 740-773-6031 or [email protected], the district said.
