MCDERMOTT, Ohio — Two schools in the Northwest Local School District have been named Purple Star Schools by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, a state designation recognizing schools for their support of students and families connected to the U.S. armed forces.

Northwest Elementary School and Northwest Middle School each earned the award, the district said. Both schools were recognized at the Ohio School Boards Association’s Southeast Region Fall Conference.

According to the certificates presented to each building, dated Sept. 24, the Ohio School Boards Association honored the schools “for being recognized by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce with the Purple Star Award for its commitment to and support of students and families of the U.S. Armed Forces.”

The Purple Star program is administered by the state to identify schools that go beyond minimum requirements in supporting military-connected children, including those of active-duty service members, National Guard members and veterans, as they transition between schools and cope with deployments.
