Karen Gall Newland, born February 6, 1950, in Leesburg, Ohio, was a faithful servant of the Lord, a loving wife and mother, a cherished grandmother, and a devoted educator. Her life was defined by her strong faith, her deep love for her family, and her unwavering commitment to others. After an incredibly strong and courageous battle with dementia, Karen went home to be with the Lord on October 14, 2026, where she is now at peace in His presence.
The daughter of Thomas and Frances Gall, Karen grew up in Leesburg and graduated from Fairfield Local High School in 1968. In 1969, she married Donald William “Bill” Newland, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in family, faith, and service to others. Karen earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from The Ohio State University in 1972, followed by a Master’s degree in Education from Xavier University in 1977. She went on to build a 35-year career in education, leaving a lasting impact on the students, educators, and communities she served.
As Bill’s coaching career took them to several different communities, Karen continued to pursue her passion for education, teaching in various school districts along the way. Eventually, they returned to the Leesburg area, where Karen taught in her hometown district of Fairfield before moving into school administration. She spent the last 20 years of her career as an administrator with Hillsboro City Schools. She brought intelligence, dedication, and thoughtful leadership to her work, always keeping students and the greater school community at the heart of her efforts.
Karen and Bill began their family with the birth of their daughter, Katie. Together, they raised Katie in the Leesburg community, where they remained actively involved and committed to serving the place they called home. Karen was a member of the Leesburg United Methodist Church, now known as Leesburg Trinity Church. Her faith was central to her life, and she served the church in numerous leadership roles and on various committees. She shared her love of music by singing in the church choir and leading the cherub choir when Katie was young. Years later, she continued that tradition leading a cherub choir alongside Katie and sharing her love of music and faith with young children, including her granddaughters Gracie and Hailey.
Following her retirement from education, Karen and Bill moved to Warren County to be closer to Katie, her husband, Dave, and their three children. In 2006, Karen joyfully began what would become one of the most meaningful chapters of her life: her second career as “Mama” to Gracie, Hailey, and Caleb Hicks. Karen devoted herself wholeheartedly to her grandchildren, caring for them every day and becoming so much more than a grandmother. She was their playmate, reading teacher, piano teacher, party planner, encourager, and friend. She filled their days with love, learning, and countless memories. She was a constant presence in their lives, never missing a school concert, cross-country meet, or basketball game. She celebrated their accomplishments, encouraged them through challenges, and made sure they always knew how deeply they were loved, both by their family and Jesus. Anyone who knew Katie and the kids knew Karen, too. She was woven into the fabric of their everyday lives, and her influence helped shape the people her grandchildren are today.
Karen is survived by her beloved husband, Donald William “Bill” Newland of Mason; her daughter and son-in-law, Katie and Dave Hicks of Mason; her three cherished grandchildren, Gracie, Hailey, and Caleb Hicks; her sisters-in-law, Pat Gall of Washington Court House and Jeanette Newland of Leesburg; and several special nieces and nephews, along with many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Frances Gall, and her brother, John Gall.
Karen’s life was defined by faith, service, and an extraordinary love for her family. She leaves behind a lasting legacy through the students and colleagues she influenced, the church and community she served, and especially the three grandchildren who were blessed to call her “Mama.” Her family finds comfort in knowing she is now at peace in the presence of the Lord, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in all those whose lives she touched.
