BEAVER, Ohio — The Pike County Land Reutilization Corporation is seeking a contractor to remove asbestos from and demolish the former Stockdale School, a vacant building along State Route 335 that has sat empty for years, according to a bid notice the land bank posted to Facebook.
The land bank’s invitation to bid covers asbestos abatement and demolition of the former school at 57 State Route 335 in Beaver, a Pike County village of about 440 residents. A mandatory site walkthrough for prospective bidders is set for 1 p.m. Nov. 12, with sealed proposals due to project consultant Tetra Tech by 5 p.m. Dec. 3, the notice said. The land bank expects to award the contract on or before Dec. 15.

Contractors interested in bidding can request a copy of the request for proposals by emailing [email protected] with “Stockdale School” in the subject line or by calling 513-333-3679, according to the notice.
The project is being funded through a $508,330 grant the land bank received from the state’s Brownfield Remediation Program. Gov. Mike DeWine, Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik announced the award July 1 as part of $15.5 million in cleanup grants distributed to communities in 35 counties statewide. The grant covers asbestos abatement, air sampling and demolition of the vacant former school, after which the land bank plans to fold the site into the community’s redevelopment plans, according to the state announcement.
The Pike County Land Reutilization Corporation, commonly known as the county land bank, is a public corporation created by Pike County to acquire, clean up and return vacant, abandoned or tax-delinquent properties to productive use. The organization has received other state brownfield grants for Pike County cleanup projects, including former gas stations in Piketon and Waverly.
