WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio — The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office will set up a prescription drug collection site Saturday as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s 31st National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
Deputies will be stationed in the parking lot of the Kroger store on Clinton Avenue, near the store’s entrance, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accept unused and expired medications for safe disposal, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. No questions will be asked of anyone who drops off medication.
Tablets, capsules, patches and liquid medications sealed in their original containers can be dropped off. Syringes, sharps and illicit drugs will not be accepted, according to the DEA.
The twice-yearly collection event, held each spring and fall since 2010, is coordinated by the DEA with more than 4,300 law enforcement partners operating more than 4,400 collection sites nationwide this fall, according to the agency. The program has collected more than 20 million pounds of unneeded medication since it began, the DEA said.
Organizers say removing unused prescriptions from homes reduces the risk of accidental poisoning and keeps the drugs from being diverted or misused.
