NEW BOSTON, Ohio — Village officials closed a stretch of Oak Street in front of New Boston Stadium from 3 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m. Saturday as the community’s Halloween party returned to the stadium for the first time in nearly 30 years, the Village of New Boston said in a Facebook post.
Parking near the stadium was more limited than during other events held in the park, and officials asked residents who had another way to reach their destination to use it while the closure was in effect, the village said.
Traffic coming into the village from Milldale Road was directed in front of New Boston School, and vehicles leaving the village onto Milldale Road followed the same route in reverse, according to the village. Police officers, firefighters and village service workers were posted along the route to direct traffic, officials said.
Dismissal from the event was handled the same way the village manages traffic after other gatherings at the park, to keep vehicles moving quickly once the party ended, the village said. Officials asked drivers to use caution in the area for families attending the event.
The village had said it was the first time in close to three decades that the Halloween celebration returned to the stadium, with music, food, candy, a costume contest, a pumpkin decorating contest, a haunted trail ride and a dance on the field planned for the evening. Village officials acknowledged it would take some time to work out logistics for an event of that scale after such a long gap and asked residents for patience.
New Boston is a Scioto County village of about 2,300 residents along the Ohio River, almost entirely surrounded by the city of Portsmouth. Trick-or-treating hours for the village were set separately for Oct. 31, about a week after the stadium party.
