PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Portsmouth Fire Department is now accepting applications for its annual Christmas gift assistance program, the department said in a social media post.

Applications can be picked up and completed ones returned, along with the necessary documentation, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Central Station, 1529 Gallia St., unless other arrangements are made, the department said. Nov. 27 is the last day to turn in completed applications.

Residents with questions about the program can contact Administrative Assistant Hannah Grimm at (740) 354-1200, according to the post.

The department said it is changing its application process this year to align with how other organizations in the area handle holiday assistance requests. Applicants will now be required to provide proof of guardianship and proof of hardship, and the department will compare its list of applicants against other local programs to prevent duplicate assistance.

The Portsmouth Fire Department operates three stations — Central Station on Gallia Street, the Hilltop Station on 17th Street and the Sciotoville Station on Harding Avenue — and serves the city of Portsmouth and the Sciotoville area under Chief William V. Raison.
