BLOOMINGBURG, Ohio — Bloomingburg village council appointed Julia Thacker to a vacant council seat after a public interview process with five candidates, according to minutes from the council’s Sept. 8 meeting.

Council members questioned five candidates — Thacker, Gayle Brown, Virgil Jones, Corey Mack and Thomas Price — about their experience with local government, willingness to attend meetings and community events, and ability to work through disagreements, the minutes show. Council then moved into executive session to discuss the candidates before returning to open session and voting unanimously to nominate Thacker, in a motion made by Melissa Hixon and seconded by Tonya Fleak.

Council also approved Resolution 26-18, an emergency measure reappropriating cemetery levy revenue within the village’s 10-mill levy to the general fund, after a resident asked for an update on the levy earlier in the meeting. Village Solicitor Emerson McGinnis said the change would take effect next year.

In other business, Village Administrator Bob Daugherty told council that Miller Pipeline has begun work through the village, and a resident asked that the company better manage debris left behind. Water Clerk Doug Wallace, who was hired in June, asked that his posted office hours be moved up to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays so he would have time to close out the till before the bank closes. Council opted to leave the hours unchanged so residents who work later in the day could still reach the office.

Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 6 at 6 p.m.
