MCARTHUR, Ohio — The Vinton County Dog Shelter stayed at or near capacity through October, taking in 15 dogs over the month while finding new or returning homes for 13 of them, according to a statistical breakdown the shelter posted to Facebook.

Of the 15 dogs brought in or picked up during October, seven were adopted, six were returned to their owners and three were sent to rescue groups, the shelter said. Staff also fielded 140 phone calls and administered 21 vaccinations over the course of the month, and responded to calls after normal operating hours on six occasions.

The shelter, located at 31479 State Route 93 in McArthur, said it remained “very full” throughout October and asked county residents for patience as staff work through the backlog. Adoptions and rescue placements can slow down in the fall and winter months, the shelter said, even as intake continues.

“We like posting these to show everyone what it is like in a month working here at the dog shelter,” the shelter said in its post.

The Vinton County Dog Shelter operates with a single dog warden responsible for stray and surrendered dogs across the entire county. Adoptions are handled by appointment, and the shelter’s standard adoption fee covers a dog license for the current year, core vaccinations, a microchip, flea and tick treatment, deworming, and a leash and collar.

The shelter said it had not published one of its monthly breakdowns in some time but plans to make the recaps a more regular feature so residents can see the volume of animals the county’s lone dog warden manages.
