HILLSBORO, Ohio — UC Health’s Mobile Mammography Unit will visit the Highland County Family YMCA on Aug. 29, offering local women a chance to get screened for breast cancer without driving to Cincinnati, the Highland County Health Department announced.
The mobile unit will be parked at the YMCA, 201 Diamond Drive in Hillsboro, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments are required and can be scheduled by calling 513-584-PINK (7465), according to the health department.
The van is equipped with 3D mammography technology, which UC Health says gives radiologists additional views of breast tissue to help identify areas that need further evaluation, an advance the health system says can reduce the need for callback appointments compared with older imaging methods. A screening on the mobile unit typically takes about 15 minutes, according to UC Health.
The Hillsboro stop is one of several the mobile unit makes throughout the region as part of UC Health’s effort to bring breast imaging services directly to smaller communities, removing convenience barriers that can keep women from being screened.
The health department said early detection significantly improves outcomes. Patients whose breast cancer is caught early have a five-year survival rate of 98%, the health department said. About 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime, and roughly 75% of breast cancer cases occur in women with no family history of the disease, according to the health department.
